Sweetwater County Travel & Tourism

Here at the edge of Red Desert country, you may find some of the Turritella Agates which are scattered over the dry prairie south of Wamsutter. These agitated shells were once homes for various forms of life in the marshy flats or lakes that were once Wamsutter (which was originally named Washakie). Due to confusion with Fort Washakie in Fremont County, the town was renamed for a German bridge builder on the Union Pacific Railroad.
