Ask any serious fisherman (or woman) in Wyoming where to find the biggest trout and the best waters and they might feed you a fish story. After all, its fairly common for anglers not to share all their secret fishing holes. But that doesnt matter. There is so much good trout fishing in Wyoming, you will almost certainly have success, and besides, local tackle shops and fishing outfitters are in business to help you succeed, whether you are an experienced angler or just a novice.

The only native trout species in Wyoming is the Cutthroat Trout and the Wyoming Game and Fish Department has a program that recognizes anglers who catch each of the four subspecies of cutthroat trout Bonneville, Colorado River, Yellowstone and Snake River Cutthroat known as the Cutt Slam.

The two most desirable trout in the state are Rainbows known for their great fight once they have struck a fly and Brown Trout, which are usually the largest trout caught in Wyoming.

Where will you find these trout Start at the headwaters of the North Platte from Saratoga upstream to the WyomingColorado state line a freeflowing stretch of water known as a blue ribbon fishery for its number and size of trout. Experienced anglers will tell you it is not unheard of to catch (and release) upwards of 80 trout in a day on the North Platte, many of them weighing in at two or more pounds; some tipping the scales at 10 pounds. The upper reach of the river is a demanding stretch during high water and the fishing is best once the spring runoff has concluded and the water clears. It is also prime in early fall.

From Saratoga head north to Casper, and then strike out for the Miracle Mile, a stretch of the North Platte River located between the Seminoe and Pathfinder Reservoirs. The mile varies in length depending on the water levels in the two reservoirs and here you have the option to fish a river, or engage in reservoir fishing on either of the two big bodies of water.

From Casper travel west and north to Cody, where you have exceptional waters to fish including the Clarks Fork of the Yellowstone River and the North fork of the Shoshone River. These rivers are prime waters beginning soon after spring melt and continuing until late fall.

From the Cody country, travel through Yellowstone known for its own quality fishing to the Snake River in Jackson Hole, another great place to wet a fly. Youll find that fishing and floating the Snake River is relaxing and exhilarating. Youll have the chance to see the sparkle of a Rainbow making his run after he hits your fly, and can enjoy a view of the majestic Grand Teton range all at the same time.

Bighorn Lake extends for 71 miles through Montana and Wyoming (31 of the miles are in Wyoming). Whether out on the giant lake itself, or on a narrow stretch inside the Bighorn Canyon, you'll find no shortage of brown and rainbow trout and other game species like Black Crappie, Burbot (Ling), Channel Catfish, Sauger, Smallmouth Bass, Walleye and Yellow Perch. Wyomingfishing.net ranks Bighorn Lake as the third best lake in the state for fishing. I'd bump it up to number one because of the scenery. When your arm gets tired from casting and pulling giant trout in, start warming up for Day 3 (backcountry fishing) by taking a short hike on the 120,000 acres of the surrounding Bighorn National Recreation Area. Oh, if you're passing through in the winter, there's quite the ice fishing scene on this lake too.

<a10:updated>2009-02-19T14:46:37-08:00</a10:updated>

Fly Fishing

Does the thought of catching a fighting Rainbow trout weighing from two to ten pounds make you drool How about casting a fly over rippling waters while bald eagles soar overhead Or floating a cold river, reeling in trout and having a view of snowcovered mountain peaks rising not far away

The unspoiled rivers, crystal lakes and alpine streams are still largely untapped and brimming with trout. While wading through a creek, you're probably more likely to see a deer or antelope than another person. Wyoming has some of the best fishing in the country, and there's plenty to go around.
It's no wonder then that it is considered, by some, to be the best trout stream in the continental U.S. (it's got both rainbows and browns) as well as the best brown trout fishery in the world. (Of course when using such superlatives to describe any fishing area, there is always lively dispute.) The river was actually closed to fishing from 1975 to 1981 because of Native American disputes, but fishermen the country over breathed a sigh of relief when these were resolved.

So what's so special about this river For starters, it's a tailwater fishery. That means that A, it is downstream of a dam; B, the water is cool in the summer and C, the water is ice free in the winter (this last allows for a longer growing season for the trout, which in turn allows for huge fish). And, not to get too scientific, but the surrounding limestone geology allows for large populations of mayflies and fresh water crustaceans, which happen to be excellent food sources for the fish, so there are lots of fish. Top these large numbers of large fish with a small number of anglers and you do have one of the best trout streams in the country. There are spots you can wade the river, but I recommend floating it instead.

<a10:updated>2009-02-19T14:46:56-08:00</a10:updated>

Fishing Spot: Gray Reef

Gray Reef, a mere 45 minutes from Casper is similar to the Miracle Mile in several important features and dissimilar in several important features. First the similarities: Gray Reef, like the Miracle Mile, is tailwater fishing (meaning it is downstream from a dam). It is also home to the same footballsized rainbows and browns as the Miracle Mile.

Now differences: Flows in Gray Reef are much more constant than in the Miracle Mile (meaning dryfly anglers of all abilities, but especially beginners, will have more success at Gray Reef). The Miracle Mile is a great walkandwade stretch. Because it crosses much private property were in ranch land here where it is illegal to drop anchor or walk on the streambed, Gray Reef is best fished by boat. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly when looking to create that RiverRunsThroughIt feeling, Gray Reef, despite its proximity to Casper, is less dotted with flicking fly rods than the Miracle Mile. And that means more solitude and more fish for you.

<a10:updated>2009-03-03T08:42:39-08:00</a10:updated>

Opening day of fishing in Yellowstone National Park

Memorial Day weekend signals the opening day of fishing in Yellowstone Parkfinally! The western side of the park opens and includes the Firehole,Madison and Lewis rivers,as well as Lewis Lake. After seeing the "combat fishing" at some roadside access areas,I have focused on Lewis Lake.Sometimes icy, often snowy, this lake performs well in the cold conditions of early season.Bright lures and fly patterns,as well as standard trout catching patterns, can all work well for June.I always bring a boat and work shallow water for the most action on midsized trout.Brown Trout and Lake Trout are the expected catch,in the 14" to 24"size range, along with the occasional Brook Trout.

Nestled between Seminoe/Kortes Dam and Pathfinder Reservoir, flows are varying wildly varying. To a novice like me this information means nothing, but to those who know about fishing, it alerts them this stretch of river is all about nymphs and not dry flies. My little bit of experience is with dry flies, but I switch to nymphs, which dangle and dance under the water rather than float on top. And, I start to listen to my guide.

Walking along the riverbank, occasionally stopping to enjoy the shade of a giant cottonwood and looking for a new channel or slot to wade into (walking and wading being preferable to floating here), Im trying to pay attention. Really. But that eagle is still circling overhead and I dont think Ive ever been able to see so far in so many directions. My mind manages to register scud population, stonefly nymphs and common naturals before drifting off again.

Mr. Guide is losing patience. This is one of his favorite stretches of river and he wants me to see why: specifically gargantuan fish. Many fish are in the 14 to 18inch and five to 10pound range. He says he has a friend who took an 18pound rainbow here. After I snare a sage, there is no longer any doubt hell have to show me the goods himself. Twenty minutes later Im petting what might be the largest rainbow Ive ever seen. And he says it is on the smallish side.

<a10:updated>2009-02-19T17:02:09-08:00</a10:updated>

Fishing Spot: Saratoga to Seminoe River

I promised a flyfishing friend I wouldnt write about this section of river. Hopefully he wont find out. Past the tiny town of Saratoga, the riverside scenery changes from ranch bottomland to the highplains desert (the same highplains desert youll see in the Miracle Mile) that distracts me so. But here there are no water flow fluctuations and there are hatches to pay attention to and dry flies to select. So I should have no excuse; yet I do. The wind. It never seems to stop here. I cock the tip of the rod back and Im fighting an invisible force. The line gets all tangled and the hook disappears into my vest. I want to disappear into a Saratoga bar, but the guide tells me this might be my best chance at catching something. We continue floating along.

A few hours later I am better in tune with the wind. Ive even gotten a few fish to rise to a yellow mayfly but I wasnt then able to seal the deal. Finally, with darkness coming in I announce my last cast. And I get something. Itd be a nice ending to the story if it was a fish, but I cant twist the truth that much. I can say it was a trophy log though.

<a10:updated>2009-08-28T12:54:42-07:00</a10:updated>

Wind River Canyon Whitewater & Fly Fishing

<H1 style"MARGIN: auto 0in"><FONT color#070844><xml:namespace prefix st1 ns "urn:schemasmicrosoftcom:office:smarttags" /><st1:place w:st"on"><st1:PlaceName w:st"on">Wind River <st1:PlaceType w:st"on">Canyon Whitewater & Fly Fishing<xml:namespace prefix v ns "urn:schemasmicrosoftcom:vml" /><v:shapetype id_x0000_t75 stroked"f" filled"f" path"m@4@5l@4@11@9@11@9@5xe" o:preferrelative"t" o:spt"75" coordsize"21600,21600"> <v:stroke joinstyle"miter"></v:stroke><v:formulas><v:f eqn"if lineDrawn pixelLineWidth 0"></v:f><v:f eqn"sum @0 1 0"></v:f><v:f eqn"sum 0 0 @1"></v:f><v:f eqn"prod @2 1 2"></v:f><v:f eqn"prod @3 21600 pixelWidth"></v:f><v:f eqn"prod @3 21600 pixelHeight"></v:f><v:f eqn"sum @0 0 1"></v:f><v:f eqn"prod @6 1 2"></v:f><v:f eqn"prod @7 21600 pixelWidth"></v:f><v:f eqn"sum @8 21600 0"></v:f><v:f eqn"prod @7 21600 pixelHeight"></v:f><v:f eqn"sum @10 21600 0"></v:f></v:formulas><v:path o:connecttype"rect" gradientshapeok"t" o:extrusionok"f"></v:path><xml:namespace prefix o ns "urn:schemasmicrosoftcom:office:office" /><o:lock aspectratio"t" v:ext"edit"></o:lock></v:shapetype><v:shape id_x0000_s1026 style"MARGINTOP: 1in; ZINDEX: 1; MARGINLEFT: 90pt; WIDTH: 150pt; POSITION: absolute; HEIGHT: 112.5pt; msowrapdistanceleft: 6pt; msowrapdistancetop: 6pt; msowrapdistanceright: 6pt; msowrapdistancebottom: 6pt; msopositionhorizontal: absolute; msopositionhorizontalrelative: text; msopositionvertical: absolute; msopositionverticalrelative: line" o:allowoverlap"f" alt"Exciting Wind River Canyon rapids!" type"#_x0000_t75"><v:imagedata o:title"whitewater2" src"file:///C:DOCUME~1ScottLOCALS~1Tempmsohtml101clip_image001.jpg"></v:imagedata><xml:namespace prefix w ns "urn:schemasmicrosoftcom:office:word" /><w:wrap type"square"></w:wrap></v:shape>

Winding through the mountains and heavy timber of the Medicine Bow National Forest, the upper section of the North Platte is remote, wontseeanotherfishermenfordays remote. Instead youll keep company with elk, coyotes, deer, mountain lion, bear, bighorn sheep, moose and eagles. Oh, and more gigantic trout. Like the landscape it cuts through, the river here is wild steep grades, rapids, large boulders so it is best to wait until after the runoff is finished (usually June). Truly dedicated flyfishermen walk in and spend days meandering along the river, fishing and camping en route. Another option is to do the same with a drift boat or canoe.

<a10:updated>2009-05-28T09:55:37-07:00</a10:updated>

MyWyoming Stories: Made My FlyFishing Arm Itch

We were camped north of Jackson Hole. The morning was crisp and clear, the Tetons red from the sunrise, and bison all around our campsite. Slowly driving through the herd hearing their calls, and seeing the rank order was impressive at how this falls into place with wild life. The clear mountain peaks rising from the valley floor, and crystal clear water in the lakes and streams made my fly fishing arm itch. The mountains are my home in Colorado, but the wide open space in the Wyoming mountains calls for return visits. Wyoming northern corner reminds me of the majesty, glory, and power of an all Mighty God who loves beauty and so do I.
