Native Americans, even if they were from warring tribes, used to settle down shouldertoshoulder into hot springs along the banks of the North Platte River here. Modern soakers can sit in the same riverbank pools as Native Americans did. They can also settle down into the quaintly dilapidated, openair, freetothepublic Hobo pool. Or the ginormous, 70footlong outdoor pool at the historically posh Saratoga Inn & Resort. Or, if the snowflakes are falling too fast and furious to sit out in the elements, try one of five teepeecovered pools (also at the Inn & Resort). While the Hobo Pool is my summer soaking preference (mostly because of that free admission), come winter the Saratoga Inn & Resort is worth almost any price. Numerous fireplaces and featherbeds piled high with wool Pendleton blankets ensure you'll be as warm and toasty outside the pools as when sitting in them. For those who feel they need to "deserve" a soak, there are 400 miles of snowmobile trails in the nearby Snowy Range and Sierra Madre Mountains and unlimited skiing and snowshoeing opportunities in the more than one million acres of the Medicine Bow National Forest.
<a10:updated>2009-02-10T12:15:32-08:00</a10:updated>

Snowy Soaking: Granite Hot Springs

If you like the idea of wildlife watching and are looking for a bit more of a wilderness feel, head to the northwestern part of the state just south of Grand Teton and Yellowstone national parks to Granite Hot Springs in the BridgerTeton National Forest. While Granite's waterfallfed, 104degree, sevenfootdeep pool tucked into the base of a cliff is beyond what dreams are made of, that's not even the best part of a winter day spent there. Anyone with a car can get to Granite between spring and fall, but only those willing to snowmobile or dogsled the 12 miles in from the highway can soak here come winter. While there is only one dogsled operator eighttime Iditarod veteran Frank Teasley's Jackson Hole Iditarod Sled Dog Tours that makes the trip, there are numerous Jacksonbased snowmobile outfitters to choose from. The biggest difference between them is what they'll serve up for lunch after you're done soaking.
<a10:updated>2009-02-10T12:08:52-08:00</a10:updated>

Snowy Soaking: Hot Springs State Park

You would think the thick blanket steam that rises from the world's largest mineral hot springs all winter long would be the first thing that catches your eye here in Thermopolis in centralwest Wyoming. And you would be wrong. You see, not only do winter's chilly temperatures thicken the steam coming off the springs, but they also help with snow. And snow, in turn, helps the Hot Springs State Park's resident herd of bison stand out even more than usual. There's just no way a dozen 2,000pound, uberfurry, espressobrown quadrupeds can hide when everything is white. But don't let the bison herd distract you for too long. There is soaking to be had after all. Lots of it.

Thermopolis offers several soaking options. The Star Plunge pool and its waterslides are popular with families and the youngatheart. Those looking for a more sedate experience head for the State Bathhouse, where there are indoor and outdoor soaking pools as well as clothingoptional private tubs. In the latter, soakers are able to crank up (or down) the water temp as they wish. All of the public pools are generally kept around 104 degrees. (When the 3.6 million gallons of water that flow into the pools daily first come out of the ground they're a sizzling 127 degrees.)

<a10:updated>2009-02-10T12:03:48-08:00</a10:updated>

Snowy Range Scenic Byway
A 41mile paved highway from the old mining town of Centennial over the rugged crest of the Snowy Range to the North Platte River Valley. This classic ski area is close to two of the state's population centers: a mere 32 miles from Laramie, home to the University of Wyoming, and 75 miles from Cheyenne, the state capital.

Skiing at Snowy Range is simplicity itself. It is only a ski area not a resort with highspeed lifts, skiin/skiout lodging, pay parking or other trappings of bigleague resorthood. Rather, it remains downhome and compact, offering the kind of lowcost, lowkey, familyfriendly skiing that people often complain has been lost.

The ski area is set just east of Snowy Range Pass in the heart of the Medicine Bow Mountains, where the Continental Divide has its easternmost thrust. It captures an average of 260 inches of a snow each winter. Pacific storms pass over the Divide and drop their loads on Snowy Range. With modest skier traffic, powder often lingers from storm to storm.

Drive down the short access road, park, shoulder your skis and walk over to the simple, functional day lodge to get geared up. Thats all there is to it. Snowy Range offers up 27 congenial trails fanned out over a pair of adjacent mountains and five lifts. The layout makes it easy to create mix and match routes for maximum variety, yet is so sensible that you can glide from the top of any lift to the bottom of any other, which giant ski areas can't offer.

Locals consider Snowy Range a day trip, but it is also a lowcost getaway for visitors. Tiny Centennial, 5 miles east of the ski area, offers accommodations. Laramie provides even more lodging options, plus the range of dining and entertainment options expected in a university town.

<a10:updated>2009-02-20T10:31:05-08:00</a10:updated>

Snowy Range Ski Resort

Snowy Range offers a friendly, exciting winter adventure for you and your family. Numerous meadows with deep powder snow attract riders along the entire system. Unlimited public land is available for great snowmobiling throughout the entire Medicine Bow National Forest. Full Services can be found in Laramie, Saratoga and Rawlins. Limited facilities and services are available along the trail, however, food, lodging, fuel, and restrooms are readily available. Other attractions include scenic lookouts and warming huts. Guides, tours and rentals are available in Laramie and the Snowy Range Ski area. There are 12 permit selling agents located in this area to meet your needs. Six roadside parking areas are available which provide easy access on and off the trail.

A popular downhill ride is the North Fork Trail, which crosses the North Fork of the Little Laramie River. The trails upper end, which is the best place to start, lies along Brooklyn Lake Road. The 4.4milelong trail cruises through an open parklike setting before dropping into a steep ravine that cradles the river. Switchbacks take you down to the river, where bridges help you cross it.

The trail ends in the North Fork Campground about five miles west of Centennial on Highway 130. Due to the trails downhill nature, its best to use a shuttle system for this ride. Or, drop the kids off at the top and drive down to meet them in the campground.

Closer to Centennial are the Little Laramie and Corner Mountain loop trails. Both wind about seven miles through forests of aspen, spruce, Douglas fir and lodgepole pine. Bobbing up and down across the landscape, the trails never prove too intimidating for novice and intermediate riders.

Ambitious bikers can start the day at the top of the North Fork Trail, then follow the Sand Lake Road down to the Little Laramie Trail and, if you still have energy, cruise back down Highway 130 to the Corner Mountain Trail.

<a10:updated>2009-02-19T16:34:02-08:00</a10:updated>

Getting Soaked on the Snake River

Nearly 200 years ago the Snake River and its many tributaries were flush with beaver, which lured the mountain men to this strikingly wild corner of Wyoming. These days its the river itself that lures me and thousands of other wannabe whitewater cowboys anxious to ride the Snakes swirling, heaving and churning pockets of air and water. The eight miles of seething river that flows in a ragged cut between the Snake River and Wyoming mountain ranges south of Jackson earns top grades for its waves, holes and chutes that test paddlers skills.

For at least 43 years, rafters have been floating the Snake River, both its calmer waters inside Grand Teton National Park and along this stretch that leaps, jumps and bounces southwest towards the Idaho border.

Between our put in at West Table Creek and our take out at Sheep Gulch stretches an 8milelong ribbon of liquid bareback bronc, a frothing rope of water broken on occasion by mellower stretches that dont demand as much attention as do the true rapids. As our paddles churn the water, we think of the rapids that await us. The initial assault will be on Station Creek, STurn, Cutback and Little Kahuna, rapids that carry Class 2 designations. Beyond those beginner rapids are others more often categorized as Class 3:

Taco Hole can at times fold unsuspecting rafts in half. ThreeOar Deal commands the utmost respect at high flows. Big Kahuna, a schizophrenic patch of whitewater, provides a bigger kick at low water than at high. Lunch Counter offers a nice shoreline for taking a break but ridiculously huge standing waves at high flows. Rope, with its wave train, can buck the unsuspecting
out of their raft. Cottonwood is one of the rivers most technically challenging stretches at low flows thanks to the rocks that are revealed.

Although it typically takes less than two hours to run through the canyon, at times it seems like an eternity for us to navigate some of the bigger rapids. We beach the raft at Sheep Gulch and were ready to regain our footing on terra firma. Behind us is a river that has cut through granite, one with a rambunctious reputation that weve managed to tame, if only this one time.

<a10:updated>2009-07-30T13:02:31-07:00</a10:updated>

Snowy Mountain Brewery and Pub

<a10:updated>2009-05-20T08:16:52-07:00</a10:updated>

Snowy Mountain Lodge
Located six miles from Centeninal in the Snow Mountain Range. Because we have doctors and medications of all sorts, most modern hot springers arent looking for therapeutics or healing though.

Granite Hot Springs
Twelve miles down a dirt road (summer) and groomed snowmobile and sleddog track (winter), Granite Hot Springs is tucked deep in the Gros Ventre Mountains. Jackson Hole Iditarod Sled Dog Tours runs daily roundtrips from their headquarters at the junction of Highway 189/191 and Granite Springs Rd. to the 105degree public pool at Granite Hot Springs. Arriving at the pool, you wont be the only one there, but it is big and, in winter, steamy enough youll feel you have the whole thing to yourself. Soak a bit, enjoy a BBQ lunch prepared by the JH Iditarod crew, and then soak some more before mushing the team back home.

Saratoga Inn & Resort
Saratoga, a hamlet of 2,000 people on the banks of the North Platte River, has a long hot springs history. Even if they were from warring tribes, Native Americans used to sit peaceably sidebyside in the warm waters, which were considered neutral territory. As more and more people began to come to the area, a public bathhouse and pool were built. Theyre still around today, open 24 hours a day/seven days a week and free to soak in, but theyre not that romantic. For that, head to the Saratoga Inn & Resort, a historic hotel with rooms every bit as inviting think featherbeds, Pendleton wool blankets, river rock fireplaces and warm western décor as the multiple soaking pools. Saratoga Inns main pool is 70feet long and kept at a constant 100 degrees. River rocks ring the top. Five much smaller private pools are made of river rock and, to really ensure privacy, covered by tepees. If you really want to indulge, the resort even has a spa, golf course and microbrewery.

Thermopolis
Thermopolis Hot Springs State Park is the most visited park in the Wyoming State Park system. While families love the herd of buffalo wandering the park grounds and the Star Plunge pool with its waterslides, couples migrate to the unromanticallynamed State Bathhouse. While the State Bathhouse has an indoor and outdoor soaking pool (both of which require bathers to wear swimsuits), it also has clothing optional private tubs where, not only do you get the place to yourself, but youre also the total supervisor of your soak, able to pick the water temperature you want. The State Bathhouse is open 8 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. daily.

<a10:updated>2009-02-20T09:48:16-08:00</a10:updated>

Expert Tip: Medicine Bow Winterland

Winter never passes Wyoming by. Locals and visitors treasure crisp, cold air, sparkling snow, abundant scenic beauty, real Western authenticity and an astonishing absence of crowds. Excellent places for a winter getaway are not necessarily the cities, the highly developed ski resorts or the carefully managed national parks but smaller towns offering a rare combination of outdoor adventure, tranquility and offseason bargain prices.

The Snowy Range Ski Area, a laidback, familyfriendly ski and snowboard area, is open Thursday through Monday, plus daily during holiday weeks, until early April. With four chairlifts, 27 trails and a 1,000foot vertical, it is large enough for variety but compact enough so that it's not intimidating. Centennial is also the gateway to 325 miles of fabulous snowmobile trails in the Medicine Bow National Forest. Roughly half are groomed regularly and the other half are marked and signed but not groomed. The Old Corral and the Snowy Mountain Lodge can arrange for snowmobile rentals or tours, or you can book directly with Snowy Range Snowmobile Tours. Other comfortable lodging and snowmobile rental options on the Centennial side of the forest include the Albany Lodge and Mountain Meadows Cabins. You can also drive to snowmobiling galore via Highway 230 west of Laramie.
Even deep into summer it is easy to see how the Snowy Range portion of the Medicine BowRoutt National Forest earned its name. Glistening white remnants of winters blizzards cap the 12,000foot mountain peaks. Bird life is abundant and Snowy Range trout fishing is considered to be about the best in the west. Thermopolis should be proud of its hot springs; not only are they among the worlds largest, but quite possibly the friendliest. And, if the hot springs themselves arent impressive enough, did we mention theres a resident herd of wild bison roaming the grounds

Once a part of the Wind River Indian Reservation (home to Eastern Shoshone and Arapahoe tribes), Chief Washakie sold the hot springs to the U.S. for $60,000 in 1897 with the caveat that a portion of them always be reserved for free public use. A pageant celebrating this exchange is held annually the first full weekend of August. Thermopolis, Greek for hot city, eventually took its name from the springs.

Today Hot Springs State Park, the busiest in the Wyoming park system with upwards of 1 million visitors annually, operates the free State Bathhouse (living up to Chief Washakies request) while two concessionaires run hot pools complete with water slides, spa facilities and tanning decks. Not surprisingly, each group of pools draws a different clientele. Families make a beeline to the concessionaire pools for the water slides and other amenities, while those who just want a relaxing soak head for the quieter State Bathhouse. In addition to having both an indoor and outdoor soaking pool, the State Bathhouse also offers private tubs where you can control water temperature with the flick of a faucet.

All of the pools in the park get their water from the same source though: rain falling on the nearby Owl Creek Mountains enters porous rock layers and moves slowly downward, picking up heat and minerals from the rock as it goes. Hot gases eventually force the water up through crevices and into the Big Spring in the state park. Daily, 3.6 million
gallons of this mineralrich (sodium, zinc, titanium, magnesium, bicarbonate, among others), 127degree water dont worry, its cooled before it reaches the soaking pools flows through the Big Spring and into the various pools, Jacuzzis, saunas and steam rooms. Most of the bathing pools are kept at around 104 degrees.

<a10:updated>2009-02-19T14:42:41-08:00</a10:updated>

Brooklyn Lodge Bed & Breakfast
Historic Mountain Lodge atop the Snowy Range Mountains in the Medicine Bow National Forest. Day two crosses Colorado's ast North Park with views of the Rawah Wilderness and Never Summer Range tot he east and the Zirkle Wildto the west. The tough part comes as riders turn onto UW hwyscale Rabbit Ear's Pass. for the climb is a 10 mile, t descent, ending for the day in Steamboat Springs. Day three, riders pedal 82 miles, first heading west and passing through Craig, CO, before turning north and returning to Wyoming. The day ends in the small community of Baggs. Day four promises to be particularly sceniis east, first passing Battle Mountain and then heading into the Sierra Madre Mountains. Its a 30 mile climb to Battle Pass, followed by a 10 mile descent into Encampment. From there, the tour meanders through the Upper North Platte River basin to Saratoga, where riders can end the day with a soak in the hot springs. Snowy Range Pass, at 10,847 feet is the primary climbing challenge on the fifth day. The final day is a relatively flat 32 mile ride to return to Laramie.
<a10:updated>2009-06-15T11:39:53-07:00</a10:updated>

Majestic Medicine Bow Peak

At 12,013 feet, Medicine Bow Peak is far from being Wyoming's highest mountain, but this broad, beefy massif is unquestionably the monarch of southern Wyoming. Just reaching this compelling mountain on the northern end of the Medicine Bow Range makes for a wonderful drive. Climbing it turns the excursion into an adventure.

The Snowy Range Scenic Byway (Wyoming Hwy. 130) slices eastwest through the mountains from the valley floor at about 8,000 feet to a high point of 10,847 feet, and from sagebrush prairie through lodgepole pine and then sprucefir forests. Deep blue lakes, often at roadside, and views of alpine tundra above are eye candy even for the casual traveler.

The byway, Wyoming's highest paved road, is open from Memorial Day through October, weather permitting. This fortunately coincides with prime hiking season. From late spring, when the snow has mostly melted, until it starts falling again, trails are clear and temperatures are moderate. Mighty Medicine Peak harbors some yearround snowfields, and the quartzite dominating the upper mountain also resembles snow. No wonder these mountains are also known as the Snowy Range.

Three easyaccess trailheads on the south and east sides are just off the byway, which parallels Medicine Bow Peak. Another trailhead accessing the opposite side of the mountain is reached via Forest Service Road 103, an unpaved road of just over 3 miles from the byway. No matter which route you choose, be mindful about summer weather. Even on days that start with sun, afternoon thunderstorms are common, making Medicine Bow Peak's enormous exposed upper reaches hazardous. Start hiking in the morning and plan to head back down early.

<a10:updated>2009-02-20T10:11:36-08:00</a10:updated>

Jackson Lake Lodge

Jackson Lake Lodge is the largest of all the ecofriendly lodging resorts in Grand Teton National Park. It hosts hundreds of rooms and cottages that fill up quickly in the summer so plan on booking early or consider visiting in the spring and fall. The lobby, with 60foot panoramic windows framing the Teton Range and Jackson Lake, is a view vacation in itself.

As the ecocenter of Grand Teton Lodge Company, Jackson Lake Lodge offers you everythingfrom several restaurants and retail shops to adventure outfitters and park tours. Its a classic National Park lodging experience, with nearby access to both Yellowstone National Park and Jackson, Wyoming.
Whatever your reason for visiting Grand Teton National Park, Jackson Lake Lodge is certainly worth a visit, even if you simply drop by for lunch and an hour to soak in the view.

Wyoming has over 2,000 miles of groomed and ungroomed trails waiting for you, including the Continental Divide Snowmobile Trail System which is consistently ranked among the best snowmobiling in the country. The majority of these trails are signed.

Each trail system offers a little bit of everything for visiting sledders. See wildlife and spectacular scenery from the trails. Toss up some powder in hundreds of meadows. Brave a wicked incline or two. It's all waiting for you.

Wyoming's long snowy season gives visitors a chance to plan more than one adventure per season. Plan on coming back again and again. Snowmobile trail grooming season is generally midDecember through April 1.
The prairies of Southeast Wyoming support farming and ranching herds of cattle and sheep and vast stretches of wheat fields color the land. The plains give way to mountain ranges the Laramie Mountains and the Medicine Bow Range (known locally as the Snowy Range), the Shirley Mountains, the Seminoe Mountains and the Sierra Madre. The cities and towns of Saratoga, Encampment, Sinclair and Rawlins give this part of the state its frontier feel. Once a logging and (briefly) copper mining area, it and nearby Encampment remain cattle country. Winter trails in the Snowy Range east of town and in the Sierra Madre Range to the west beckon crosscountry skiers, snowshoers and snowmobilers. Between them, they boast more than 411 miles of trails, over half of them groomed. Explore either range on a snowmobile with Wyoming Iron Horse Adventures.

Saratoga's most unexpected winter treat, especially after a day on snow, is the municipal hot pool, known locally as the Hobo Pool. Set beside the Platte River and just off the main street, it is open 24 hours a day and 365 days a year. Admission is free.

<a10:updated>2009-02-05T11:36:34-08:00</a10:updated>

Vedauwoo Recreation

Known to the Arapaho Indians as Land of the Earthborn Spirit, the rock formations of Vedauwoo (pronounced veedavoo) attract experienced climbers, campers and hikers. This area is conveniently located off Interstate 80 between Cheyenne and Laramie (exit 329) and for westbound travelers is their first introduction to the Medicine BowRoutt National Forest and its more than two million acres of public lands.

Laramie, 15 miles west of Vedauwoo, was begun as a frontier town by the Union Pacific Railroad in 1869 and now is the location for the Medicine BowRoutt National Forest Supervisors Office (2468 Jackson Street) where you can obtain maps and information to continue your explorations of the forest lands.

To return to the forest itself, take Wyoming Highway 130 west across the glaciercarved Laramie Plains toward the tiny town of Centennial, where you will find unique shopping and other services, before ascending toward the snowcapped peaks of the Medicine Bow Mountains known locally as the Snowy Range.
This road is open seasonally to automobiles from Memorial Day until the first heavy snowfall of the season, sometime in October. These small cities are located just a dozen miles apart and both have museums that provide rich detail about the dozens of ethnic groups who came here to work for coal mines that began operating in the Rock Springs area soon after the railroad arrived. Green River came into prominence in 1869 and again in 1871 when John Wesley Powell launched his two exploratory trips down the Green/Colorado River.

If you like diversions along this interstate route, take some side trips. From Laramie drive west on Wyoming Highway 130 to Centennial with its small shops and Nici Self Museum. At Walcott Junction (midway between Elk Mountain and Rawlins), turn south on Highway 130230 about 7 miles to an Overland Trail monument; looking west from the monument you will see the ruts of the trail. You can continue on south another dozen miles to Saratoga for a soak in the Hobo Pool (free and open 24/7). At Rock Springs leave the interstate and instead take the Wild Horse loop drive (partially paved, partially dirt) to Green River. At Green River travel south on Wyoming Highway 530 or U.S. 191 to visit Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area.

<a10:updated>2009-08-28T13:08:10-07:00</a10:updated>

Tetons for Two: An Advanced Hike to Hanging Canyon and Ramshorn Lake

The trail up Hanging Canyon isnt officially maintained, but receives enough traffic to stay in good shape. The beginning of the trail is unmarked however, so youll have to keep your eyes peeled. From the String Lake parking lot, near Jenny Lake Lodge follow the signs for Cascade Canyon. After a mile and the third small log bridge, there is a gigantic tree on your right. A small arc of rocks marks the bottom of the trail up Hanging Canyon.

This trail isnt difficult because of its length only about six miles roundtrip but because of its steepness. Once out of the trees at the bottom youll feel more like youre climbing than hiking. Loose rocks and giant boulders seek to thwart you, but, with careful steps and a helping hand, theres nothing insurmountable. And some of those giant boulders make great seats for a midramble respite.

While its easy to focus on the sweat in your eyes and throbbing legs, take time to appreciate the emptiness. Some two million people visit Grand Teton National Park each year yet, at most, youre sharing this hike with halfadozen. And Ramshorn Lake, near the canyons western end, is big enough each group of hikers can have a whole secluded shore all to itself.

If you want to make the most of this hike, bring a thermarest or two with you. Theres nothing youll want to do at the lake more than lay down, soak in the sun and enjoy a secret snooze.

<a10:updated>2009-08-07T14:53:08-07:00</a10:updated>

Road Trip Through Rock Springs and Green River

Youre travel on I80 isnt complete without stops in <a href"http://www.wyomingtourism.org/overview/RockSprings/31556" title"Rock Springs" target"_blank">Rock Springs and <a href"http://www.wyomingtourism.org/overview/GreenRiver/31541" title"Green River" target"_blank">Green River.

From <a href"http://www.wyomingtourism.org/overview/Laramie/31516" title"Laramie" target"_blank">Laramie drive west on Wyoming Highway 130 to <a href"http://www.wyomingtourism.org/overview/Centennial/31822" title"Centennial" target"_blank">Centennial with its small shops and <a href"http://www.wyomingtourism.org/overview/NiciSelfMuseum/3788" title"Nici" target"_blank">Nici Self Museum. You can continue on south another dozen miles to <a href"http://www.wyomingtourism.org/overview/Saratoga/31522" title"Saratoga" target"_blank">Saratoga for a soak in the Hobo Pool (free and open 24/7). At Rock Springs leave the interstate and instead take the <a href"http://www.wyomingtourism.org/overview/WildHorsesLoopTour/30913" title"Wild horse" target"_blank">Wild Horse loop drive (partially paved, partially dirt) to Green River. At Green River travel south on Wyoming Highway 530 or U.S. 191 to visit <a href"http://www.wyomingtourism.org/overview/FlamingGorgeNationalRecreationArea/3040" title"Flaming Gorge" target"_blank">Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area.
