Killpecker Sand Dunes
You can play in one of nature's largest sandboxes in the country just a few miles north of Rock Springs at the Killpecker Sand Dunes. The dunes seem out of place in southwest Wyoming. It's the kind of environment you'd expect to find in the deserts of Africa or the Mid-East. There's an off-road vehicle "play area" for desert toys and lots of space to walk around in the sand. The core of an ancient volcano called Boar's Tusk rises straight out of the ground and guards the Sand Dunes. Boar's Tusk is one of only two such geological features in Wyoming - the other being Devil's Tower in the northeastern corner of the state. Little known outside the Rock Springs area, the tusk and dunes are well worth the effort and time of any visitor who wants more than a “main road” trip.
