I first visited Wyoming in June 1990 as part of the bicycle Ride Around Wyoming. Not knowing anyone on the trip and being a single woman, I was unsure what to expect but looking forward to something different. The open scenery and great expanses were awe inspiring! We pedaled through the Bighorn Mountains and the weather began to turn rainy, windy and even snowy. I was not prepared for such cold, wet weather in what I thought would be summer.
My most memorial Wyoming experience was when I was stopped at a stop sign in a small town on the route. While I was checking my map in the rain, up came a pickup truck whose driver jumped out, made sure I knew where I was going, and insisted that I take a dry yellow slicker from his truck since I was already pretty soaked through. He didn't give me his name, refused to take any money for the rain slicker and drove off. As I put it on, I realized it was one of those slickers used for horse back riding with a back opening for the saddle; being a city slicker myself, I had never seen such a garment before but knew it cost that rancher a fair amount. I will never forget that generosity from a total stranger and unique souvenir of Wyoming! Not only is your state one of the most gorgeous ever, the people are truly kind and willing to show visitors a wonderful experience.
