Two significant battles during the Plains Indian Wars were located in Ranchester. Sixty-three men, women, and children were killed. Responsible for their deaths is General Patrick E. Connor. He was an agressive anti-Indian commander at Fort Laramie. Peace movements in the east had prevented Connor from killing "all male Indians over the age of 12."
What to do:
Ranchester is in the Big Horn Mountains and has many opportunities for fishing, boating, hiking and viewing wildlife. History buffs can visit Fort Phil Kearny, Wagon Box, Fetterman, and Connor Battlefield sites.
