The woofers come out to play in the big white of a winter season in Yellowstone National Park. You are quite likely to savor the pleasures of a “Three Dog Day” as documentary filmmaker Ken Burns did during his first winter trip to Yellowstone last January. He and producer/writer partner Dayton Duncan toured America’s first national park and in just one morning saw a red fox diving into fresh snow seeking breakfast, a pack of wolves making their presence known to a resting herd of bison, and a team of coyotes chasing alongside the roadway.

Some days are better than others but you can almost count on seeing frosty-faced bison warming near Yellowstone’s thermal areas. No doubt the occasional troop of trumpeter swans will echo a tune while drifting on a river sparkled in sunlight and it is ever so possible to ogle otters sliding in and out of an opening in frozen Yellowstone Lake. Bald eagles, elegant elk and many other wildlife times await your willingness to don layers, warm footgear and a big smile. Yellowstone is a winter wildlife viewing safari nonpareil and not to be missed.
