Of Wyoming's roughly 2,000 marked (and often groomed) snowmobile trails, the 675-mile Continental Divide Snowmobile Trail has been called the top snowmobile route in the West by SnoWest magazine. The North Platte River has influenced Wyoming's history and development since the beginning of civilization. The Oregon, California and Mormon Pioneer trails all followed the river through eastern Wyoming, as did the first Overland Stage route, the Pony Express and the first transcontinental telegraph line. The river’s valley supplied the grass, water and gentle grade that were critical to the success of the emigrant trails.
