Horseback Riding

Saddle up for a front-row view of unbridled wilderness on a horseback ride. It’s the ideal way to capture the authentic Western spirit that is still alive and thriving in Wyoming. In every region of the state there are ranches offering family-friendly expeditions that will create lifelong memories with the click-clack soundtrack of horseshoes on the rugged trail.

Horseback riding here can go so far beyond the basic trail ride, although there are plenty of those, too. From one-hour out-and-back trips to overnight pack excursions, local outfitters offer a range of options for every type of visitor. There’s also plenty of special packages, such as rafting in the morning and riding in the afternoon, ride and hunt in the fall, watch the sunset in the evening and go on a scenic photography outing when the wildflowers are in full bloom. Or, travel on four hoofs to a remote fishing hole where rainbow trout bite all day long. Plan an excursion that is tailored to your unique interests and schedule with a trained horse and an experienced guide and that will lead you safely, while highlighting the fascinating history and wildlife along the way.

On a dude ranch you can find a few more only-in-Wyoming horseback adventures. Join genuine cowboys and cowgirls on a cattle drive at a working cattle ranch. Learn some rodeo and roping techniques to use on the ranch, too.

Although reservations aren’t always required, it’s a good idea to book your equestrian adventure in advance. Get your giddy-up on with these ranches, guides and outfitters
